Timmy named WinterFest Snowman of the Year

After a dramatic beginning, all ended well for Timmy the Snowman, as he was named the Cochrane WinterFest Snowman of the Year during the ATCO Gas Cochrane WinterFest celebrations on Jan. 26.

After a dramatic beginning, all ended well for Timmy the Snowman, as he was named the Cochrane WinterFest Snowman of the Year during the ATCO Gas Cochrane WinterFest celebrations on Jan. 26.

Originally known as the orphaned snowman, Timmy found a home with Paige Pickering and her family in early December.

Since adopting Timmy, Paige’s mom, Lorraine Pickering, said her daughter has been working to decorate him for the Snowman of the Year pageant. Timmy was decked out in teal for the event.

“Paige wanted to decorate Timmy in teal to represent ovarian cancer,” said Lorraine, whose daughter has been battling the disease since 2011. “He even wore a headscarf like Paige did when she lost her hair.”

After undergoing treatments, Paige has now been in remission for almost 11 months. She’ll be graduating from Cochrane High School this summer.

“This project has been a great experience for us,” said Lorraine. “Paige and I got to hang out, decorate Timmy, talk about cancer and talk about family. We had never been to WinterFest before.”

Four random selected children, completely unaware of the snowman’s history, declared Timmy the winner of the competition. As the winner, Paige gets to donate $200 to the charity of her choice.

She chose Calgary’s Helping Families Handle Cancer Foundation, an organization that provides financial support to families fighting to make ends meet because their child is battling cancer.
