This weekend, golfers will be hauling their clubs and a fun-loving attitude to the Links of GlenEagles for the sixth annual Monumental Tournament of Aces.

Set to run Oct. 5, the golf tournament doesn’t operate like any ol’ golf game, said Mike Borody, co-chair of the tournament. The event will feature a mix of golf holes and fun games — all to raise money for the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation.

“This is purely a closest to the pin event,” said Borody. “The golfing is a means to an end. It’s really a social event, with the community rallying together for a great cause.”

The tournament is slated to begin at 2 p.m. Registration for tournament participants will run from noon to 1:30 p.m. This year’s event is cowboy themed, and while boots aren’t welcome on the greens, make sure to pull them on for dinner, which will run following the game.

The hole-in-one-style tourney will shake things up between holes with a variety of fun, golf-themed games. Participants can test their hand at hitting golf balls through the windows of a makeshift house, and combine their hockey and golf skills with a game of ‘holf.’

“That’s one of the coolest things about this tournament,” said Taylor Kimmett, co-chair of the event and brother of the foundation’s namesake. “If you’ve never been to this event before, or never played golf before, you can still participate.”

Kimmett said about 200 people have registered for the event and expects proceeds to near the $100,000 mark. He said there are still a few spots available for anyone who wants to bust out their clubs for the local organization.

The public is welcome to venture down to the Links of GlenEagles around 7:15 p.m. if they wish to participate in the auction and the evening program.

Kelly Kimmett, Lindsay’s father and foundation president, will be making two major announcements at the event.

The yearly golf tournament is held in support of the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation. This year, the main beneficiary of the tournament proceeds is the multi-phased Mitford Pond Project, which is currently under construction in Mitford Park.

The project got underway following a successful bid for the 2012 TSN Kraft Celebration community award. The initiative aims to improve the park — which is the home to the Kimmett Cup — by replacing the floor of the Mitford Stage and adding a storage area beneath the stage, constructing a skate change area and picnic pavilion on the south shore of the pond, upgrading the fire pit area and electrical system, and renovating the kitchen of the concession building.

Funds collected at the event will also be put towards the foundation’s Endowment Fund, which funds annual scholarships at the three local high schools, among other initiatives.

To date, more than $1 million has been invested into the community in Lindsay’s name.
