The Mitford Park Ponds are some of the most popular fishing destinations for Cochrane’s local fishing enthusiasts. But with that popularity comes some drawbacks–like waste and improperly discarded fishing lines and hooks–which the Town of Cochrane says has raised some cause for concern.

Yesterday, the Town of Cochrane said that, in June alone, more than 100 discarded hooks and a large bag of fishing line were collected by Parks staff at Mitford Ponds. That fishing waste can have adverse effects on other animal species, like birds, dogs, and even other humans, the Town says.

“Sadly, in recent years, several birds have died after becoming tangled in or swallowing fishing line,” the Town wrote in a post on its social media sites.

The Town is now advising that if people decide to go fishing at Mitford Ponds, they should take all their gear and waste with them when they leave, and that fishing line and hooks should be stored safely until they can be disposed of elsewhere.

Lastly, the Town also says that more experienced anglers should remind young fishermen and women about the impact discarded fishing gear can have on wildlife.

“Together, we can keep Mitford Ponds safe, beautiful, and fun for everyone,” the Town wrote. “Let’s protect the wildlife that calls [Cochrane] home.”
