On Saturday, September 6, one of Cochrane’s most recognizable landmarks will be celebrated in a special re-dedication ceremony. The Men of Vision statue, a piece that has stood for decades as a proud symbol of the town and its pioneering history, will once again take centre stage.

Whether spotted through roadside signage, local promotions, or while driving north on Highway 22, the bronze cowboy and horse sculpture is nearly impossible to miss. Unveiled in 1979, the statue was created by artist Malcolm James “Mac” MacKenzie to honour Alberta’s early ranching legacy and the cowboys whose spirit helped shape the province’s economy.

Since its unveiling, the Men of Vision has become deeply woven into the fabric of Cochrane. It has weathered decades of Alberta’s harsh climate, been a backdrop for countless photographs, and even endured instances of vandalism—all while continuing to stand tall as a symbol of resilience and identity.

“We're doing a re-dedication now that it is fixed,” said Karla Schultz, Public Engagement Advisor for the Town of Cochrane. “Because of the cultural significance of the Men of Vision, we wanted to make sure that the importance and the respect was paid back to what this means to Cochrane and also to Alberta.”

The ceremony will feature members of the artist’s family, who will share personal reflections on the statue’s meaning and legacy. To recreate the spirit of the original unveiling, family representatives will arrive on horseback and dramatically remove a drapery from the statue. Mayor Jeff Genung will also speak, highlighting its importance to both the community and the province.

The timing is especially fitting as the event coincides with a weekend full of cultural celebrations, including the Cochrane Immigrant Services Committee’s CultureFest and the Cochrane Integrated Arts Society’s Culture Days.

“It's really about what it means to Cochrane,” Schultz explained. “Culture and history are there that many people are very proud of. So, it's tied in nicely with all the other weekend events.”

The free re-dedication ceremony will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Men of Vision statue site. Attendees are asked to park at the Cochrane Historical Museum and follow signs along the paved pathway.

“Check out the statue, take pictures, have a cupcake and just enjoy a beautiful day,” Schultz added.
