Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) are inviting residents for a sunrise walk meant to serve as a way for Cochranites to remember loved ones lost to suicide.

Called ‘A Walk for Life,’ the new community-driven event is to take place on September 10 at Riverfront Park at 6:30 am. The Town says the walk is being offered as a meaningful way to remember loved ones lost to suicide while raising awareness about prevention and mental health support. The timing symbolizes the emotional journey from darkness to light, and from pain to hope, a Town press release states.

“Suicide affects every community, and Cochrane is no exception,” said Kim Krawec, Manager of FCSS. “This walk offers space for reflection and remembrance and reminds those who are struggling that they are not alone. Support is available, and healing is possible.”

According to the Town and Cochrane FCSS, suicide affects Canadians of all ages and backgrounds. “On average, 12 people die by suicide each day in Canada, including nearly two Albertans,” writes the FCSS in a statement. “Each loss impacts at least 10 others, leaving behind grieving families, friends and communities.”

Though often linked to youth, suicide rates among seniors are similar to those aged 20 to 39. Men also die by suicide three times more often than women, Cochrane FCSS said. Part of the national Run for Life campaign by the Centre for Suicide Prevention, this local walk brings the conversation closer to home.

“It’s not only a way to remember, but also a step toward breaking stigma and encouraging community connection. Local counsellors and therapists will be present to offer support to participants, along with resource workers from FCSS and the FRN, who will help share information about local mental health services,” the Town of Cochrane stated.
