Cochranites will have to put up with the current traffic snarl for at least four weeks as road work continues on Centre Avenue and First Street.

According to a release from the Town, the work, which started Aug. 30, is deemed essential infrastructure work aimed at, “enhancing travel experiences and improving vital corridors in the core of our community.”

“Recognizing the significance of this intersection as a crucial corridor in our community,” the release reads. “Administration wants to assure residents that the enhancements being implemented are intended to provide improved travel experiences in the long run.”

Cochranites are asked to follow all detour signs which have been put in place to assist residents and visitors in navigating around the temporary closure, and follow the instructions of flaggers on site.

Weather-dependent schedules may lead to changes, the Town warns.

The work also comes with water conservation requirements as the closure also includes the tie-in of a significant water main. From September 3 to 6th, residents are asked to follow voluntary water conservation measures to help retain reservoir levels while this work is completed. This includes water flower beds and vegetable gardens using a watering can or hose nozzle with trigger control, avoiding the use of sprinklers, and refraining from washing vehicles, sidewalks, windows or siding.

“These measures contribute to conserving water and safeguarding Cochrane’s water supply,” the statement from the Town reads.

The Town also acknowledged the impact the road work could have as students prepared to return to local schools on Tuesday. To this end, traffic signals along Highway 1A and 5th Avenue were retimed to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion. According to the Town, there has also been close collaboration with local schools which enables coordinated construction schedules, which should minimize disruptions during drop-off and pick-up times.

“Construction crews are dedicated to enhancing the community while minimizing disruptions for students, parents, and residents,” the Town states. “Motorists are urged to plan ahead and leave plenty of time, exercise vigilance around school zones and bus routes and follow posted speed limits to ensure the safety of children on their way to school.”
