Town of Cochrane crew members had to deal with a stinky situation Aug. 6 near the community of Bow Meadows.

A wastewater backup on George Fox Trail had traffic down to one lane, while town staff worked to clean up the mess.

Brown water could be seen defying gravity while it flowed upward out of the manhole cover and into the street.

Laurie Drukier, senior communications advisor for the town, said there was no danger to nearby Jumpingpound Creek and there were also no interruptions to water or wastewater services to town residents, nor was there any need for a boil water advisory.

Work on the Jumpingpound Creek flood protection and erosion control commenced this month and is expected to run through until Sept. 15.

The town received a grant to complete work on a berm on the east bank of the creek, north of the George Fox Trail bridge; and the installation of riprap on the creek banks. The town has also posted on its website that work within the creek itself was progressing slowly due to high silt levels, and that they were working with Alberta Environment on possible solutions.

The work on Jumpingpound Creek is necessary after the banks of the waterway experienced extensive erosion during the 2013 Alberta Flood.

In addition to the installation of riprap and a berm – with an average height of .7 metres – the banks of Jumpingpound will include a three-metre wide asphalt trail and mature, live stake shrubs on the creek side of the berm. For more information visit cochrane.ca.
