West Bragg Creek bridge opens; trail rebuilding, repair continues

The road bridge east of the West Bragg Creek parking lot was re-opened July 11, giving trail users full access to the recreation area’s parking lot and trail system.

The bridge was closed by Alberta Transportation for safety concerns following last month’s flooding.

With the West Bragg Creek trails remaining usable, users had been asked to park along the side of the road east of the bridge and access the parking lot by bicycle or on foot.

The area is under a voluntary travel restriction — trails are usable, but users should proceed with caution.

According to a July 3 trail report on the Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association’s (GBCTA) website, repairs have been done to a number trails including the Long Distance trail, Disconnect and Braggin Rights – Reconnect trails.

“We’re happy with how our trails held up though the rain,” said Conrad Schiebel, project facilitator for the GBCTA. “There are a few areas where there needs to be work done, but for the most part all the trails are intact.”

Trail repair and rebuilding will continue throughout the upcoming weeks.

Volunteers are welcome to join in the construction, slated for July 20 and 27, and Aug. 10 and 31. Crews are to meet in the West Bragg Creek parking lot at 9 a.m.
