“Every piece of a grassland ecosystem plays a role, whether it’s forested areas, riparian areas near wetlands or the actual grasslands themselves. They all house different species who rely on each other to survive."

“We might not be paper conservationists, but we live out here because we love this area so much. We will take care of it,” McDonald said. 

“We need to create our own learning spaces where there is room for those uncomfortable conversations without disrupting the safe spaces that the Indigenous community and black community have set up,” Ortiz said. “We can continue to organize. We can continue to look for those opportunities.”

“Even if this was a normal year, I still think this is a good platform for people to get involved. You can do it from the convenience of wherever you happen to be,” Genung said. “It’s a really good way of reaching people.”

“They were just areas where folks arriving under their own steam, cycling or walking, could pitch a tent for a night or two for a reasonable fee.”

“I know this case is unusual because we would typically, we would have a primary event or incident where police are called that would shed some light on how a person died."
