The Cochrane civic election was kicked off with a mayoralty debate held by the Cochrane and District Chamber of Commerce Sept. 18.

Fiscal responsibility means the town must live within its means, but maximize the benefits of what we spend taxpayer money on. Long-term, we can work to increase revenues, short term we must deal with what we have.

“I think we need to take a hard look at where we have some inefficiencies and where we are spending our money. I think we need to look at cutting back on some of the big projects currently in progress and re-evaluate our priorities.

To ensure fiscal responsibility I would like to see more of the municipalities working together regionally to share the cost of developing certain communication pieces when rolling out their programs.

There’s only one way to lower taxes, and that’s knowing how to say “no.” I’ve never shied away from saying no to the big spenders. In the last term, I said no to tens of millions of dollars worth of unnecessary expenses.

Police continue to investigate the cause of a crash northeast of town earlier this week that claimed the life of a 72-year-old Cochrane man. Cpl. Curtis Peters said a dump truck was travelling west on Highway 567 Monday morning about 7:30 a.m.

To ensure fiscal responsibility, the elected council will need to carefully sift through the wants, needs, and must haves of Cochrane.

Police took a step forward in the ongoing investigation of a missing woman last week by searching Morley area wetlands exposed after this summer’s dry weather.
