“The last 38 games don’t matter now.” With that, Cochrane Generals assistant coach Dan Gendur dismissed his team’s best Heritage Junior Hockey League regular-season finish since 2009 as a mere formality.

In wrestling, it’s called a “load cycle.” It’s the gradual buildup of strength and technique to have a wrestler peaking for major regional, provincial and national tournaments.

The Cochrane Cowboys Wrestling club has continued to show that they are one of the best teams in the province as members have collected piles of medals over the last couple weeks.

Cochrane Rockies under-14-year-old (U14) ringette team raised a total of $12,040 for the sixth annual Ringette Scores on Cancer tournament held Jan. 23-25 in Edmonton. In addition, the Cochrane Ringette U10 Rebels raised and additional $2,305.

The defence never rests. And that’s a good thing for the Cochrane Generals. Down 2-0 to the visiting Strathmore Wheatland Kings, the Generals got a goal from veteran d-man Dustin Ponath before giving one back in their Jan.

Coaches have their go-to guys – players they throw into any situation expecting positive results. Most recently, Cochrane Generals head coach Evan McFeeters’s go-to guy is Talus Hume, as the 18-year-old forward is making his coach look good.

Another weekend, another medal haul for Cochrane Cowboys wrestlers. At Edmonton Jan. 30-31 with their junior and senior high school teams, the Cowboys wrangled a total of seven medals.

The Cochrane Rockies were a shootout goal away from winning their home hockey tournament Feb. 1.

While usually unattainable, perfection is something hockey teams relentlessly pursue.

On a team deep in skilled forwards, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. So Cochrane Generals rookie forward Steven Tisdale can be forgiven for trying to find his way.
