In November 2003, I resigned from my job as the human resources manager for Falconbridge Ltd, a mid-sized mining company. I was 47 years old and my wife, Wendy, had died two years earlier of cancer.

What more can I say in praise of the lingering autumn we’re experiencing in our area this year? I thought I’d said enough in last week’s column. But your gracious responses suggest there’s a lot more that can be said.

Autumn in our beautiful Bow Valley is a deeply inspiring time for me. The gloriously adorned leaves move me to contemplate the opening to Psalm 19: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the skies proclaim His handiwork.

I am usually a competitor in the equine driving world, but I had an opportunity to be a spectator at a prestigious carriage-driving event near Lodi, Calif. and I took it! The event was held at a gorgeous driving facility named Shady Oaks near Lodi.

There has been some debate among residents in our community lately about whether efforts should be made to curtail growth in Cochrane.
