There was a feeling among Canadians at the time that police and governments were failing in their duties to take action to restore public order, and therefore failing in their most fundamental duty to Canadians.

Last week’s column on endurance sure resulted in some inspiring responses. One, in particular, really got me thinking. Our longtime coffee companion Annette Stanwick has lived a life characterized by endurance.

Notley rode that orange wave of anger toward the former regime, the Progressive Conservatives, to a majority government, and later took Calgary away from the United Conservatives.

“Endurance is our ability to withstand adversity and hardship…. When trouble comes, endurance gives us the strength to stay the course.”

Whatever our response, it always has to start with compassion.

With dangerous cold weather coming this week, it is important everyone take greater responsibility for their own safety and to check on vulnerable neighbours who might need a hand.

As we enter into 2024 in a world being torn apart by military, ethnic and political hostilities, a snow-covered statue in our backyard garden gives me hope – and my New Year’s resolution.
