With fewer than 700 pairs estimated to be left in the province, the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Rehabilitation (AIWC) welcomed three ferruginous hawks to the facility July 9.

Ferruginous hawks are the largest hawks found in North America and are a species that has been classified as at-risk in Alberta.

Two of the hawks were admitted to the AIWC after falling out of their nests in early June and suffering minor wounds. The third was admitted after what was most likely being attacked by another animal, the AIWC said in a press release. All three hawks are doing well and will remain in the care of the AIWC until they are released back into the wild.

The AIWC has been operating since 1993 and is a registered charity, non-profit society and accredited vet clinic that is located in Madden, Alta.
