As construction continues on the Highway 1A and Highway 22 interchange, Alberta Transportation has shared progress updates, with the Town of Cochrane advising drivers to prepare for several traffic changes starting June 20.
In a post shared on the Town’s official Facebook page, officials noted that the project remains on schedule and is entering a key phase toward completion.
“The project is on schedule, and new changes are coming that bring us one step closer to smoother traffic in Cochrane,” the Town said. “We know this project has made it harder to get around, especially for those living in Sunset. Travel has taken longer than usual, and we truly appreciate your patience as the province completes this major upgrade.”
Upcoming changes and key dates:
Starting around June 20, 2025:
- Northbound Highway 22 traffic will shift onto new lanes up to Sunset Boulevard (approx. 1 km).
- At Sunset Boulevard:
- The left lane will continue north on Highway 22.
- The right lane will exit to Sunset Boulevard.
Week of June 23, 2025:
- Paving will begin on the existing southbound Highway 22 lanes.
- One southbound lane will remain open during paving.
- Expect:
- Temporary lane shifts
- Uneven surfaces
- Possible night work
Around June 24, 2025:
- The northbound traffic signal at Sunset Boulevard will be relocated.
- Flaggers will be on-site to assist with traffic flow.
Highway 1A eastbound realignment – Late June
Starting around June 23, 2025:
- Eastbound Highway 1A traffic will be shifted to new permanent lanes west of Highway 22.
- Drivers will pass through a new roundabout on the west side of the interchange.
- A new ramp will open shortly after, allowing southbound Highway 22 traffic to bypass the temporary roundabout.
Temporary ramps may be used to connect new and existing road segments. Drivers are reminded to follow signage and flaggers closely, as routing will continue to change frequently.
“All dates are approximate and depend on weather and construction progress,” the Town advised. “Please drive carefully and remain patient as the province completes this major infrastructure upgrade.”
