In celebration of the rich and vibrant cultures of Indigenous peoples across Canada, two events will be held in Cochrane on Saturday, June 21 as part of National Indigenous Peoples Day.
The Cochrane Public Library (CPL) will host a hide tanning demonstration outside its building from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The family-friendly event will offer a hands-on experience, highlighting this traditional Indigenous art form.
“This is a hands-on experience with an in-depth look at the historical and cultural significance of this practice within Indigenous communities,” said Carmen Erison, CPL’s program and engagement manager.
Erison noted that the event is part of the library’s new program, ‘Weaving Connections: Indigenous Culture, History, and Healing,’ launched earlier this month and supported by a provincial ethno-cultural grant.
“It’s going to create vital opportunities for education, dialogue and healing, all by highlighting the rich knowledge, arts and traditions of Indigenous people,” she said.
CPL is once again partnering with Kelly Gordon of Alberta Land-Based Education, who previously led similar demonstrations at last year’s Cochrane Discovery Days and the library’s Narnia event in January.
“People are going to get a good in-depth look at what this practice looks like within Indigenous communities,” said Erison. “I believe Kelly is bringing about two to three different hides.”
No registration is required to attend the library event.
Just across the road, The Station at Cochrane Crossing will host an Indigenous Market & Gathering from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is co-hosted by the Town of Cochrane and Wazin Îchinabi Ti (House of Oneness).
“This is a great opportunity to support community and learn more about the work happening at Wazin Îchinabi Ti,” the organization shared in a Facebook post.
Local Indigenous vendors will be set up at the Cochrane Information Centre, and craft tables will be available for children.
The Station is located at 360 Railway St. W.
