Lucky 13? Absolutely.

The 13th annual Cochrane Classic is good to go Feb. 10 at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC). Bow Valley High School and Cochrane High School athletes (female and male) will be skating in the cross-town rival hockey game to raise funds for the Cochrane Activettes.

“We’re just continuing a strong tradition between the two high schools,” says Bow Valley High School leadership program official and teacher Dorothy Karlson. “On its inception, the whole idea was that high school kids can do some really neat things. Life is not always about them.”

Case in point: last year’s Classic raised approximately $1,100 for the Cochrane Activettes, which runs community initiatives like the food bank, Meals on Wheels, the 35-anniversary bursary ($3,500 to a student attending a post-secondary institution) and The Clothesline, a not-for-profit second-hand clothing store in Cochrane.

“Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre has donated the ice time for us. It’s a $2 admission and we currently have kids canvassing businesses in town; from there we get raffle prizes,” Karlson explains.

“From the money we make from the raffle prizes and the admission, all proceeds go to the Activettes.”

Karlson, who along with Cochrane High organizers Gale Cote and Lisa Gordon Reece organize this annual fundraising initiative, is proud of the students for going all-in for the event. Approximately 400 students are expected to attend the game, as in previous years.

“I’m lucky enough I get to see things of this nature more frequently than other people in the community,” Karlson said. “It’s our firm belief that if you give kids an opportunity to do great things, they will do it and even exceed your expectations.”

Your opportunity to watch the 13th annual Cochrane Classic hockey game is Feb. 10 at SLSFSC. The puck drops at 4 p.m. Admission is $2 and there will be door prizes and raffle prizes up for grabs at the game.
