Whether you’re five or 81, when the rhythm of the drums calls, you’ve got to answer.

Howard Kelly, a recent resident at a senior’s home in Airdrie, could have chosen a quiet retirement — but instead, he reignited his passion for music.

“Drumming has become a deeply fulfilling part of my life,” said Kelly. “It gives me energy, joy, and something meaningful to look forward to each day.”

A native of Comox, B.C., Kelly has lived a life full of adventure. He built careers as a restaurateur and charter boat business owner — but music has always held a special place in his heart. Last year, he picked up the sticks, bought a drum kit, and began learning under the guidance of Cochrane Drum Tutor Edward Allen.

“Howard is a complete original,” said Allen. “He’s feisty and fun and has shown tremendous grit to learn his drum part over the last few months. It’s such an inspiration to see him working so hard on something he loves doing!”

As Kelly keeps the beat in his golden years, a much younger percussionist is making waves with similar passion. Five-year-old Thomas Smith, a student of Allen as well, has already performed live — including a rousing rendition of Yellow Submarine alongside Calgary’s Beatles tribute band, All You Need is Love.

“Thomas is such a great little drummer,” said his dad, Jeremy Smith. “He’s worked so hard to learn his song, and apart from his endless bad jokes that always seem to involve me having a chicken on my head, it’s a joy to teach him!”

Thomas is the youngest of three drumming brothers — Daniel, Eli, and Thomas — all taught by Allen and encouraged by their dad, who’s also a drummer.

“It’s really cool to watch my boys learning the instrument and playing new rhythms and songs,” Jeremy added. “And I get to learn things too!”

For Allen, teaching young students is all part of the joy.

“It really is remarkable that these three young brothers are all such excellent drummers,” he said. “Their lessons can sometimes feel like a mix between a hockey game, a football match, and a video arcade — but it’s never dull!”
