While several parts of southern Alberta were hit with severe weather including heavy rain, dark skies, and hail ranging from pea to quarter size, Cochrane remained mostly unaffected during the August 4, 2025 thunderstorm.
Environment and Climate Change Canada had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area, citing potential for nickel to ping pong ball-sized hail and intense downpours. However, Cochrane saw a much milder outcome.
“Super calm here in south Cochrane though as the cells split and bypassed us to the north and the south,” reported one local resident on Facebook around 2 p.m., tracking storm activity in real time.
Neighbourhoods including Fireside, Heartland, Bow Ridge, and Glen Eagles experienced only light to moderate rainfall, and only briefly.
Despite yesterday’s near-miss, Environment Canada continues to forecast unsettled conditions for today (August 5). There’s a 60% chance of showers this afternoon with the risk of a thunderstorm, followed by partly cloudy skies and a continued 60% chance of evening showers. The risk of thunderstorms lingers into the evening before skies clear later tonight. Overnight temperatures will dip to a low of 7°C.
