Cochrane Ramada reduced to rubble in demolishment

Crews are on site demolishing the Cochrane Ramada Hotel after the building suffered significant damage in a fire on Feb. 6

The Cochrane Ramada has officially been demolished.

The building, owned by Canalta Hotels, was ravaged by a fire on Feb. 6 that burned throughout the evening, with hot spots cropping up that had fire crews returning to the site throughout the next day.

According to a demolition crew member, the entire building was torn down except for the pool area in the back northeast corner and a car port canopy, located in the back parking lot — both of which suffered little to no damage.

As of press time, the entire building had been reduced to rubble.

The fire was determined to have started in the top northwest corner of the building, according to Cochrane Fire Services inspector Jeff Avery, an area which is also home to an electrical room.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and lab investigations are still ongoing.

Ryan Semchuk, Canalta marketing manager, said in the days following the fire that while the loss was expected to be great, the company had no intentions of leaving the community and would likely salvage what they could of the hotel and rebuild the rest.

The Eagle has reached out to Canalta for further comment and this story will be updated when further information becomes available.
