As part of the Crossroads musical concert series, the Springbank United Church is welcoming the pipes of Lonnie Saunders, a Calgary-based singer with a soulful country-gospel sound.

The internationally recognized singer will be performing at the church May 25.

The performance will get underway at approximately 7 p.m.

“She’s been described as having a golden voice and it’s true — it’s a big voice,” said Linda McLean, a committee member at the Springbank United Church.

“She’s an incredible artist, and she has the skills and awards to back it up.”

Saunders has been the recipient of numerous Country Gospel Music Association awards, including topping the list as Psalmist of the Year in 2009 and as Female Entertainer of the year in 2010.

This is the third year of the Crossroads concert series, which McLean said aims to showcase local artists from the area. While past performances include highland dancing and local bands, Saunders will be the first gospel performance.

She’ll be accompanied by pianist Gloria Goertz.

Following the performance, attendees are invited to stick around for a meet and greet with the artists.

While concert admission is free will, McLean said the suggested value of the show is $15.

The proceeds from the event will be divided between the artist and the church, going towards the church’s programs and operational costs.
