Elizabeth Barrett Elementary School will be holding two student-centered events within the next two weeks.

First, the school’s council is presenting Developing Resiliency in Children with Dr. Wayne Hammond on Feb. 4 at the school. The evening starts at 7 p.m. with a $5 admission.

Dr. Hammond is the president and executive director of Resiliency Initiatives and holds an adjunct status with the School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He will speak about the importance of developing resiliency in children and how it positively affects their mental health. His presentation will also highlight the importance of letting children learn through failure and mistakes.

According to the Resiliency Initiatives website, over the past 20 years Hammond has primarily worked with high-risk youth and their families with a focus on substance abuse and violence issues, as well as other related mental-health concerns.

The school will also be holding student-led conferences on Feb. 10-11 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The conferences give the students a chance to demonstrate their learning, be it their leadership skills, creativity, artwork, and more.

The students are also working on developing portfolios and setting goals with their teachers that will hopefully be met and updated next semester.

These conferences will demonstrate the children are playing an active role in their learning.
