An eight-year-old girl is in Alberta Children’s Hospital after being struck by a semi truck in Cremona on Feb. 25.
The Freightliner truck was travelling north on Highway 22 when the girl was hit while crossing the road within a crosswalk.
According to a press release from Didsbury RCMP, the driver — a 27-year-old male from Caroline — swerved to avoid the girl, but ended up striking her with the side of the truck.
Emergency services responded to the incident, which happened at approximately 3:30 p.m.
STARS Air Ambulance was contacted at 3:46 p.m. to take the child to Calgary.
“When we responded, emergency services were already at the scene,” said Cam Heke, spokesperson for STARS.
“We transported her to the children’s hospital. She was in life-threatening condition en route to the hospital.”
As of the morning of Feb. 26, she was still listed in critical condition.
RCMP said speed, alcohol and weather conditions are not being considered as factors in the incident, although the crash is still being investigated.
