Holy Spirit approves care programs

Holy Spirit School will be pushing ahead with implementing care programs in the school and it has promises of being more than just a day care.

Starting in Fall 2018, Cochrane’s only Catholic elementary school in partnership with Summit Kids, an educational child care program, will be available for families as an option for parents and guardians who need childcare before and after school.

All students from kindergarten to Grade 6 would be welcome at the before and after school care program while the Kindercare program would allow kindergarten students to remain at the school in the afternoon or to come in the morning – though it would not be considered full day kindergarten.

“Our big thing is not just being a place where we can take care of kids, we’re very interactive and engaging with them,” explained Danny Yanko, marketing and communications director with Summit Kids.

“It’s really giving them more than what they get at regular daycare, (we’re) working with them on what they’re already learning (in school) so it sticks with them a bit more.”

The care programs will operate in a designated classroom in the school and will be known as the “Summit Kids” room.

It’s the first time the program has rolled out at Holy Spirit School, however, CSSD has had this program available in a number of its Calgary schools.

Parents and guardians would absorb all associated costs, which is still being assessed. However, Yanko said are subsidies available to families who require it.

Representatives from Summit Kids will be available to discuss more details at the school during parent teacher interviews on March 22 from 8:45 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. as well, at the Kindergarten orientation night on May 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
