United Conservative Party (UCP) leader Jason Kenney addressed a room of around 90 people at the Cochrane Lions Event Centre on March 2 for a unity celebration.
Although the party is in its infancy, Kenney maintains that the UCP is the fastest growing political party in the country and that if elected, next summer will be “the summer of repeal,” beginning with the repeal of the NDP’s carbon tax.
Kenney threw out his fair share of jabs at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his recent trip to India in the name of building relationships, which has been heavily chastised by critics.
“After just three years he’s already less popular than his father after 16 years,” said Kenney, ensuing roars of laughter from the crowd.
UCP deputy leader Leela Aheer also attended the ticketed event. Aheer, also a professional musician, delivered an acoustic performance to a crowd over dinner and cocktails.
“It never ceases to amaze me the level of support for this movement from this community ... despite the bad weather we had a full house come out and celebrate unity,” said Philip Cape, vice president of fundraising for the Banff-Cochrane UCP constituency association.
