The Ladies Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion No. 15 invite Cochranites for a spot of afternoon tea and treats on Nov. 5, to raise money and honour the lives of Canadian troops in the lead-up to Remembrance Day.
The annual event was held every year prior to the pandemic and is always held around Remembrance Day.
For $8 admission, visitors can partake in a poppy tea-bake sale hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cochrane Royal Canadian Legion No. 15 building. Guests will enjoy tea, a variety of snacks, and the chance to win a door prize.
The money raised through the event will be donated to senior services and local charities in Cochrane. Cochrane Rodeo Queen Kyla Lightfoot is also scheduled to attend and will be helping serve tea.
Although the event is open to everyone, vice-president of the Ladies Auxiliary Mona Sylvestre said this is a popular event for local seniors in particular.
“It’s usually a lot of seniors and people who have lived in Cochrane for a long time,” she said. “They come and sit, just about for the whole time they visit and they enjoy it very much.”
Sylvestre believes that hosting events like this for Cochranite seniors always benefits the community. As a branch of Cochrane’s Legion, it also helps keeps the Ladies Auxiliary operational and contribute to the Legion itself. Sylvestre mentioned that the Ladies Auxiliary will help send out poppies out to local businesses.
“We’ve done that annually, too,” she said. “We’ve helped with that and different things that they ask us to do. It supports the Legion.”
Sylvestre said this event is a reminder and a way to help serve the seniors in Cochrane.
“It’s important to keep the Auxiliary going and have this poppy tea in remembrance of veterans,” she said. “And also for the old timers in town because they like to chat with people and they usually know quite a few who attend in that group.”
