On Aug. 22, runners will complete a portion of a 100 kilometre-relay through the Cochrane area in an effort to help fight the battle against cancer.
The second annual Sears Great Canadian Run is a long-distance running relay where teams of up to 20 and individual runners will embark from the RockPointe Church in Bearspaw.
The course is divided into several legs, varying length from four to 12 kilometres through Cochrane and Water Valley. Each team creates an individual strategy to manage the 100-kilometre course.
Stacey Kucharuk, captain of the team ‘Because of You’, said this year’s run means a great deal for her family since her three-year-old son Colby was diagnosed with cancer last February.
Kucharuk said they were inspired to join the race after they saw how brave and determined their son was, and wanted to help other children undergoing the same battle.
“We want to help ensure that kids like him can overcome this huge obstacle and still have strong bright futures,” Kucharuk said, “which is why we have put a team in for this year.”
Every day, 43 Albertans are diagnosed with cancer: 301 every week, almost 10,000 every month and over 100,000 every year. One hundred per cent of the proceeds raised from the run will go to various children’s cancer charities and organization. Money raised will help fund Camp Kindle, a camp dedicated to children with cancer located in Water Valley. To date, the run has raised over $2.5 million for cancer fighting initiatives across Canada.
