Four Calgary hikers missing overnight on the Prairie Mountain Trail in Kananaskis Country have been found unharmed.
Cochrane RCMP responded to a Jan. 31 call of overdue hikers on the trail. The call was received at 11:30 p.m. when four hikers had not returned from their day hike on the trail situated across from Elbow Falls along Highway 66.
The hikers with various hiking experience left Calgary at 11 a.m. and were due to return around 4 p.m. They had only planned a day trip. When they did not return, police were contacted by family members who in turn attended the parking area of this popular hiking trail. The hikers’ vehicle was found undisturbed at the Prairie Mountain Trail parking lot.
Following a search in which the Calgary Police Service’s HAWCS helicopter had been called for, the hikers were found safe and sound at 9:25 a.m. Feb. 1 after spending the night in the woods.
The names and ages of the hikers have not been released.
