Students at Rocky View Schools (RVS) are the target audience for Canadian-based international humanitarian organization Right to Play this month.

The organization is in the middle of its National Inspirational Speakers Series. Canadian skeleton athlete Darla Montgomery is visiting 10 schools in the RVS district, along with Right to Play representative Maggie Cockburn.

“The primary objective of the National Inspirational Speakers Series is to educate students and educators about the Sports For Development and Peace Movement,” said Julia Myer, deputy director of school and university partnerships for Right to Play. “…which uses activities and play-based learning to educate youth in disadvantaged nations.”

Myer said Montgomery, a Calgarian, is a fantastic role model, who bears an inspiring personal story of using sport to achieve her dreams.

“We are playing a huge role in protecting children’s rights and securing the future of children and youth around the world. The Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development have generously provided a series of grants to help support Right to Play’s programs in five African countries – Rwanda, Mali, Benin, Ghana and Liberia.”

One of the world’s leading humanitarian organizations, Cochranites have been supporting Right to Play initiatives through ‘marathon man’ Martin Parnell’s numerous quests over the last several years.

Using sport as a tool for development, Right to Play aims to reach 150,000 students and 330 schools by working with more than 30 school boards for the sake of this campaign.
