Safety concerns prompt gravel truck route change

Gravel trucks hauling through River Heights will soon be re-routed, according to a Sept. 17 press release from the Town of Cochrane.

Gravel trucks hauling through River Heights will soon be re-routed, according to a Sept. 17 press release from the Town of Cochrane.

The new gravel haul route will be relocated to the future location of James Walker Trail, just south of River Heights Drive. It’s anticipated the re-route could be in effect as early as this winter.

Currently, River Heights Drive is used each day by gravel trucks to travel back and forth from the gravel pit on the south side of the Bow River. The release stated that residents in the area had complained about noise and raised safety concerns.

“We knew there was a solution that would work for residents, the gravel pit operator and the developers,” said Kathy Dietrich, senior manager of planning and engineering with the Town.

Work is anticipated to begin in the next few weeks. The new gravel haul route involves no financial contribution from the Town or from taxpayers. The reroute includes measures to control dust and speed.
