A strike, which began Aug. 10 and left BURNCO workers on the picket line, ended after four days.

Negotiations between BURNCO Rock Products Ltd. and Teamsters Union Local 362 ended the evening of Aug. 13 with an agreement in place.

In all, 96 drivers from four plants (Cochrane, Calgary, Okotoks, Airdrie) are back to work with what BURNCO chief executive Michael Powell said in a joint statement was a “fair agreement.”

“In light of the difficult economic times facing many Calgary businesses, we want to thank the union for working with us to find the best solutions possible for everyone,” said Powell.

“We believe a fair agreement has been reached. Most importantly, it ensures that we are able to keep all of our employees working, which benefits their families and our customers.”

Last week, the Eagle reported that BURNCO was using managers to continue their delivery of products to the community, but striking employees worked to slow trucks from leaving the plant in a timely manner.

“Although neither side got everything they wanted,” said Bernie Haggarty, business agent for Teamsters Local 362 in a press release, “the amended position that was negotiated since the work stoppage will guarantee respect in the workplace and the ability for both sides to move forward.”

BURNCO and its workers were back to normal operations as of Aug. 17.
