While maintenance crews will be attempting to keep roadways clear of snow and ice, Cochrane drivers still need to do their part to keep roads safe in the winter.
While drivers are always encouraged to drive according to highway conditions, there are a few handy driving tips that will help people navigate the roads in a safe and efficient manner.
According to a fact sheet compiled by the Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association on the Alberta Government’s website, the tips start before you even pull out of your parking spot.
Drivers are urged to carry an emergency roadside kit in the vehicle, as well as to fully clear all snow and ice from windows, mirrors, headlights, taillights and licence plates.
While it is always best to stay off the roads during major storms, the publication asks drivers to:
- Slow down when conditions aren’t ideal.
- Stay back from snowplows.
- Route your destination ahead of time.
- Keep your headlights on at all times.
- Never use cruise control in winter driving conditions.
- Try driving outside the previous tire tracks to give you some extra traction.
- Gear down for both uphill climbs and downhill grades.
- Take your foot off the brake if your vehicle begins to skid, and then steer in the direction you wish to go.
- Know your braking system, and how it reacts on ice.
