The first week of June is Seniors’ Week, and the Town of Cochrane and Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) are partnering with community organizations to honour local seniors.
From June 2 to June 8, the Town and FCSS will host Seniors’ Week, which they say is an “opportunity to recognize the invaluable contributions of older adults in our community, while offering residents aged 50 and older a wide range of free events, activities, and learning opportunities.”
This year’s celebration includes things like educational workshops, health and wellness sessions, live entertainment, luncheons, games, and more. According to the Town of Cochrane, a key feature of the week is the Seniors’ Resource Fair, taking place on Saturday, May 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cochrane Alliance Church.
The fair will showcase local organizations and service providers who specialize in supporting older adults in Cochrane and surrounding areas. Throughout the day, attendees can also enjoy presentations from a variety of expert speakers on topics relevant to aging well in our community.
“We’re proud to offer such a diverse and engaging week of activities that celebrate and support our seniors,” wrote Kim Krawec, Manager of FCSS, in a post on the Town of Cochrane website. “In addition to the incredible programming, the Seniors’ Resource Fair gives our community a chance to learn about the many services available to older adults.
The Seniors’ Week festivities officially kick off on Sunday, June 1, with a BBQ luncheon hosted by the Cochrane Legion starting at 11:30 a.m. According to the Town, the luncheon will feature a performance by the Good Vibes Memory Choir and include activities like music, bingo, and the unveiling of Cochrane’s Age-Friendly Action Plan and newly developed Memory Kits.
Created in partnership with the D.O.T.S. Committee, Cochrane Public Library, and Vital Minds Psychology, the Memory Kits are designed to “support the mental, physical, and emotional engagement of individuals living with dementia and their loved ones.” The Town says the Memory Kits will be available to borrow through the Cochrane Public Library.
A full and comprehensive schedule of Seniors' Week can be found at the Town of Cochrane website. To make it easier for older residents to participate in the week’s events, free rides on Cochrane’s Local On-Demand Transit (COLT) will be offered throughout the week for individuals aged 60 and over.
