A June 27 collision involving two motor vehicles may result in impaired driving charges, while two males were still in hospital in critical condition as of June 29.
At around 6:30 p.m., Cochrane RCMP and EMS responded to a report of a collision on Hwy 1A, 5 km west of Cochrane between Horse Creek Road and Grand Valley Road.
Reports from witnesses indicate a white 2002 Nissan Sentra was heading eastbound on Hwy 1A when they attempted to make a U-turn due to heavy traffic.
A white 2010 Cadillac SRX, driven by a lone female occupant, was heading westbound at the same time, when the vehicle making the U-turn was struck by the SRX.
The two male occupants of the Nissan were transported by STARS to Foothills Hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries. The female driver of the SRX was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The RCMP collision analyst is assisting with the investigation. Evidence on scene indicates alcohol may have been a factor with respect to the occupants of the Nissan.
Blood samples have been taken from the two males for analysis and charges may be pending.
Hwy 1A was closed for several hours and traffic was redirected to use Hwy 1 during this time.
A dump truck driver who lost control escaped injury June 29.
Cochrane RCMP responded to a single vehicle motor vehicle collision June 29 around 1:30 p.m., where a dump truck driver reportedly lost control while travelling eastbound at Springbank Road and Range Road 35.
The vehicle struck a power line, causing it to come down onto the truck and trapping the driver inside.
The male occupant remained inside the vehicle, awaiting Fortis to cut the power. Rocky View Fire Services, Redwood Meadows Fire and EMS were also on scene to assist.
Once the power was cut, the male was able to be safely removed from the vehicle and was not injured.
No charges will be laid. This portion of the road was closed for around seven hours, as Fortis worked to fix the power line and reconnect the power.
A four-vehicle collision resulted in no injuries June 27.
Cochrane RCMP responded to the call after 1 p.m. that afternoon, where it was reported one vehicle had crossed the centre line heading northbound on Hwy 22 at the Bow River bridge.
The result was a ‘chain reaction’ of sorts, with three vehicles behind the first colliding into one another.
The incident is still under investigation, although alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
