The long-anticipated Highway 1A/22 Interchange Project is finally entering its final phase, with completion targeted for the end of this year.

Alberta Transportation confirmed this week that the multi-year infrastructure project, first launched in fall 2021 in partnership with the Town of Cochrane, is on track for a full opening in fall 2025. A partial opening is expected in the coming weeks, pending favourable weather.

“The current phase is the last one before the full fall 2025 opening,” Alberta Transportation told The Eagle. “It’s anticipated to be open to traffic this fall, contingent on weather.”

Despite encountering typical construction challenges such as unanticipated ground conditions and minor design modifications, the Province reported that progress has been steady.

According to the Town of Cochrane, several major permanent features came online in July, including two new roundabouts and permanent Highway 1A lanes under the Highway 22 bridge.

Recent changes implemented include:

  • Northbound Highway 22 traffic accessing eastbound and westbound Highway 1A now uses a new loop ramp and east roundabout.
  • Southbound Highway 22 traffic accessing both directions of Highway 1A is routed via a new exit ramp and west roundabout.
  • Westbound Highway 1A traffic heading to southbound Highway 22 is using a new west loop ramp.
  • Eastbound Highway 1A traffic to northbound Highway 22 continues using the west loop ramp and temporary roundabout—unchanged since late June.

“A partial opening of the interchange with traffic flowing east and west on Highway 1A is anticipated over the next few weeks,” Alberta Transportation noted.

Looking ahead to August, several key adjustments are scheduled:

  • A new traffic movement from Highway 1A to northbound Highway 22 will open via the east roundabout.
  • Highway 22 will be realigned in both directions through the interchange.
  • The temporary detour roundabout, in operation since 2023, will be permanently closed.

While no specific fall date has been confirmed, officials emphasize that completion timelines are weather-dependent.

The interchange project aims to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and expand pedestrian and cycling access in Cochrane’s busiest traffic corridor. Public sentiment has long echoed a desire for quicker commutes and fewer delays and that goal appears closer than ever.
